Having said that, it still captures the spirit of the original excellently (although it does make you remember that those first games weren’t actually very good). This latest Carmageddon was financed by a pretty modest amount of money on Kickstarter, and it shows in terms of the production values throughout. It’s dated, and badly so, but despite myself, it was hard not to chuckle occasionally. The humour is extremely low-brow and designed to cause as much offense as possible. The one highlight is the announcer, saying all his lines with gusto and tongue firmly in cheek. It’s not the best accompaniment, although better than the really cheap sounding effects.

The music is still licensed, and still full of speed metal and grungy electronica, but from artists I’d never heard of before. To add insult to injury, the game is also locked at 30FPS, despite the fact that it wouldn’t be a particularly good looking game on the last generation of consoles.

Impressive car destructibility aside, the terrain and textures are blocky, pedestrians are poorly animated, and many of the weapon effects lack a sense of depth. It’s really not a pretty game by any standard.

There was a point where I was genuinely wondering whether Max Damage was a remastered version of the original game. I’m assuming matchmaking was working, but clearly most people are playing offline (or I was perennially unlucky). I’ve not scored the game for multiplayer every time I tried searching for a game, it either timed out or no-one was playing.
